Did You Inherit Your Family MIS-Fortune?
Re-invest it!!

What might “Inheriting a Family Mis-Fortune” mean?

I believe that the family that we are raised in has a kind of belief culture.  Think of the things your mom or your dad always said to you, so often that you just knew when they were going to say them.

Things like:

  • “You got a B here - why didn’t you get an A?”
  • “It is better to not rock the boat.”
  • “Why can’t you be as good as your brother/sister?”
  • “If it’s not perfect it’s not good enough.”
  • “What will people think?”
  • “You just have to hunker down, tough it out, soldier on.”
  • “Oh, come on, you don’t really feel that.”
  • “What’s wrong with you?  Can’t you do anything right?”

The actions and expectations and behaviors that develop around these beliefs over the generations become a kind of family culture.  We grow up in the middle of this culture, and we think that this is the way the whole world is.  This is the emotional inheritance of our family, passed along through time.

Your family’s particular emotional inheritance makes you see yourself in a certain way.  It makes you think and feel and act in one of two directions:  that either the world is out to get you, or that the world is a friendly place.  Usually it is the former, and over time we learn that thinking this way hurts.  But we also end up thinking that it is our fault.

We don’t realize that we have a choice!  We don’t know about the great fortune that lies within us, gathering interest, waiting to be utilized.

EFT is really good at opening the way for us to make choices that feel better to us.  In fact, lots of times, people say things like “Even though that experience was hell to live through, I wouldn’t trade it.  I learned a lot from it.  I learned what is really important to me.”

Here is an example from my life and how I learned from it:

I grew up feeling invisible.  My parents were pretty good parents in many ways, but they were raising me to be someone very different from who I actually am on the inside.  They had their ideas about how I should be, and therefore they didn’t see ME.  They just saw all the ways I wasn’t like their model of the ideal child.

My mother had extremely low self-esteem.  “What will people think?” was almost a mantra for her.  That must have characterized her own early life as well.  So I grew up not knowing who I was, because no one around me reflected ME back to me so that I could know the deepest best ME that I was.  I grew up thinking that it was way more important to please other people than it was to please myself, and that pleasing others was how to be seen by them, and how to deserve to be here.

This family belief culture was better than being raised by angry, abusive parents, obviously, and I am thankful for that.  But the result was that my entire life has been about having to learn for myself how to see myself, and value who I am.

That gave me a very strong intention when I became a mother myself.  I put all of my attention into learning how to see, hear, sense and reflect back to each of my very different daughters, right from their birth onwards, the pure goodness and the particular individual Truth as it expressed in each of them.  My daughters are now 24 and 27, and I am still doing that!
The blessing of learning to deal with this “challenge of invisibility” in my life — learning to see my own goodness, learning to see the unique way each of my children uniquely expressed the goodness in herself — is that over the years I became a pretty good mother.  And then my experience of “good motherhood” became the foundation of being able to see and feel into the heart of goodness in everything.

This capacity to sense, hold, and reflect a person’s goodness, until they can know it for themselves, makes me a more attentive, intuitive, supportive EFT practitioner.  I may never have learned to have such clear, heart-felt inner vision if I hadn’t been plagued by feeling invisible.  Now the honoring of this process of becoming visible to oneself, of standing in a strong sense of personal value and worth, is at the center of my sense of spirituality.

My daughters have grown into independent, deep spirited individuals.  Of course they each also have their own issues to work through with the force and creative energy of their own lives.  And likely they have their own version of learning how to be visible to themselves. It is one of the family legacies, after all!  I trust that they will be successful.

We are all learning to transform some particular thread in the tapestry of our ancestry.  We are re-investing our family’s emotional inheritance.

I believe that each generation has the opportunity to take stock and re-invest what we have been given.  As we all do our own bit, we further the course of human evolution.  This is a good mission to have!

Galway Kinnell’s poem says it all:

The bud
stands for all things
even for those things that don’t flower,
for everything flowers of self blessing;
though sometimes it is necessary
to reteach a thing its loveliness
to put a hand on the brow
of the flower
and retell it in words and in touch,
it is lovely
until it flowers again from within, of self blessing.

from St. Francis and the Sow

Isn’t that a perfect description of EFT?
