Tapping into Your Own Creative Healing Power

About
Nancy:
I have been practicing family medicine
for about 20 years.
I suffered from fibromyalgia for over
20 years and
always believed that there
was a way
to get free of the
debilitating pain
of this disorder. About 5 years ago, I was introduced
to the mind-body
work
of Dr. John
Sarno. I
developed
a protocol
for applying his
principles to my own pain, and
I have been free of symptoms ever since. I co-authored
a book, FREEDOM FROM
FIBROMYALGIA, with
a patient who
also got "cured," detailing
the methods we used
to accomplish this.
These
tools, coupled with
the techniques that
we teach
in this
class, show great
promise in helping
people with
the chronic pain
that so often fails
to respond
to traditional
medical treatment.
About
Rue:
I have been in
private practice
for 17 years
as a counselor
and intuitive
mentor, using what
I think of as "profoundly lighthearted strategies for unsticking
stuck stuff." My background includes university teaching, seven years
as a staff member of the Findhorn Foundation in Scotland (an international non-denominational
spiritual community and educational foundation), being a wife and a mother of
two young women now in their twenties, and extensive training in psycho-spiritual
philosophy and therapies. My
teaching style is
open, welcoming,
safe, grounded,
intuitive and
flexible.
“I
am most pleased to wholeheartedly endorse the proposed
presentation by Rue Hass and Nancy Selfridge, M.D. Together
they have forged a unique collaboration to bring complementary
mind-body interventions to their workshops for people with
the Fibromyalgia syndrome. As a rheumatologist I see many
patients with the diagnosis of Fibromyalgia. I have
found that mind-body interventions are often quite useful
in alleviating symptoms in this difficult to treat syndrome.”

in
their effectiveness."

"Several
years ago, I was working as an attorney when I experienced
an acute case of mononucleosis. In the ensuing
months, I did not
recover and eventually was diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome
and fybromyalgia. I gradually realized it is tricky to heal from
these conditions. In my own reading and research I learned that
the healing process is not well understood.
I
was referred to Dr. Selfridge this year. It was she who gave
me a coherent explanation for the underlying, mind-and-body,
systemic
basis of my illness.
Then,
this summer, I was fortunate enough to
be able to participate in the Freedom From Fibromyalgia
class she and Rue Hass developed.
This class is utterly different from any healing methods
I read about or had tried before. Nancy and Rue as a team bring
information
that
is based in science, but also is an interplay between science
and the new ways we are starting to work with energy for healing.
Nancy
teaches the medical science, which is impressively grounded in
her knowledge as a medical doctor and the latest research.
Nancy also teaches functioning of the body and the
psyche
so that the listener
really grasps her vision of the way these illnesses
work. Her approach is congruent with the actual experiences of
class participants, who,
some for many years, have experienced the symptoms
of
fatigue and pain. She provides the scientific, rational support
for
the proposition
that we really can heal ourselves. She is extremely
knowledgeable. Her style is accessible and lively. She is nonjudgmental
and supportive. Because she herself has healed from fibromyalgia,
she is an inspiration.
Rue
brings in the actual experiences we need in order to
shift and allow the body to heal. She leads
guided visualizations.
She teaches
the Emotional Freedom Technique, which is one of
the "magical," energy
elements of the classes. I have experienced EFT as an amazing
shortcut to healing. Really amazing. Quick and elegant.
The more you learn
to do it, the better it gets, like dancing or jazz or any
improvisational creative activity. I am eager to continue
to learn it and practice
it. Rue also models and embodies the emotional states that
result from the EFT healing. She is nonjudgmental and emotionally
supportive.
She is extremely knowledgeable. Her style is accessible
and engaging.
The
thing I appreciate most is that we are being taught
to do this ourselves, so the body can accomplish the
healing.
We are
not being "fixed
by the experts." This is the most marvelous example
I have experienced of the combination of modern medicine
supporting and being supported
by a new "energy" technique for healing. My
personal belief is that this is part of the medicine
of the future.
I believe these
techniques would help bring "Freedom From" the
pain of many chronic illnesses.
Nancy
and Rue are articulate, prepared, knowledgeable,
funny--in short, delightful and
skilled teachers. Their
message is
interesting and important. I unequivocally
endorse them as presenters."

"EFT
is a comforting, simple, rewarding technique for relaxing
and calming down.
I got a different, clearer
perspective on my emotions. Rather than being in
the chaos of them, caught and bottled up, which always
made me run
away from them in
the past, my emotions became diffused, and I could
look at this particular traumatic incident with curiosity
and
more compassion for myself
and the others involved. I could explore what was
going on inside, and I felt safe to know my feelings without
being controlled by them.
I left the class feeling slowed down inside, peaceful,
present and alive."
“Wild Geese” by Mary
Oliver
You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
for a hundred miles through the desert repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting —
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.
